Session 1 - High Risk Living and Schools: Root Behaviours and Solutions
Many youth, and the adults influencing them, are at a high risk of dangerous or criminal behaviours as an offender, a victim or both.  These same people also suffer from the most problems in our schools. Causes transcend specific community boundaries, as do the solutions. The strategies presented in this workshop are practical, inexpensive and based on skills integral to functional living.  These are applicable to parents, educators and police officers.  Although educators are not responsible for the problems, with these strategies they can take some ownership in solving them.

Session 3 – Risk Assessment for Field Trips
In a society where what people want is the appearance, but not the essence of risk, how can schools protect their most valuable assets, their students, and yet still give them the opportunity to experience adventure? This is the risk paradox which schools face today.

Key areas of interest include:

  1. Defining key terminology; threats, hazards and risks
  2. Looking at the legal context for assessing risks
  3. 5 step plan to assessing risk
  4. Creating a risk assessment document

Session 1 - Tree Risk Assessment Workshop
Trees are an essential component of the outdoor environment of our schools, providing environmental benefits and an important learning resource for teachers and students. But, for property managers, are trees assets or liabilities? What are the risks from trees on and adjacent to school properties to staff, students and the public, and, can they be assessed and managed effectively? Tree risk assessment and management practice has improved dramatically over the past 10 years with our greater understanding of tree biomechanics and revised risk assessment methodologies.

This workshop will cover:

  • Trees as assets
  • Perceptions of tree risk versus the actual risk of harm
  • The biomechanics of trees
  • What is a hazard tree
  • Factors to consider in tree risk assessment
  • Methods of assessment
  • Consistency and uniformity
  • Risk management of trees; case studies from two school boards in Ontario
  • Cost benefits of tree condition and risk assessment
Presenter: Paul Hambidge, Treescape Ontario

Session 3 - School Inspections 101
Please join Jennyfer Payeur and Julie Welsh of OSBIE’s Risk Management department to learn what type of hazards are causing losses in Ontario schools. Annually, OSBIE inspects over 400 schools as part of our H.E.L.P. program and often times the same hazards are spotted over and over again. As such, we have ample information to share in order to make every school as safe as possible. In addition, we’ll discuss the importance of documented maintenance routines and share personal experiences from school audits..
