FIRST AID PR0VIDERS/ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION
School board employees who volunteer to become First Aid providers, are covered
by the board's liability insurance.
The policy provides protection to teachers, staff and volunteers in the event
injuries are caused to others through their negligence.
Teachers, staff or volunteers who provide First Aid to staff, students or others
are deemed to be carrying out these duties on behalf of the board.
Similarly, teachers, staff or volunteers who administer medications to students,
at the request of parents and doctors are deemed to be carrying out these duties
on behalf of the board.
OSBIE's comprehensive liability policy provides protection to teachers, staff
and volunteers in the event injuries are caused to others through their negligence
while administering First Aid or prescribed medications.
RISK MANAGEMENT TIP
It is an excellent risk management strategy for schools to have trained First
Aiders on staff. It is recommended that trained First Aiders be present at high
risk sporting events such as football and hockey.
Administering of Medications should be done in accordance with board procedures.
Procedures should include obtaining signed request forms from parents, instructions
regarding dosage from parents or doctor, logging of the medications themselves
and dosages given, and storage of medications in a locked central location.
