Risk Management Track

This track is focusing on current Risk Management issues facing Principals and Educators.

Session 1 - Guns & Gangs in Schools

Youth gangs are a phenomenon of today's society.  This session will explore an introductory look at youth gangs, their structure and identifiers of gang involvement.  In addition, you will learn how administrators can deal effectively with students in their schools who have ties to youth gangs.

Session 2 - Cyberbullying

Participants will explore the impact on Ontario schools of the ever-evolving landscape of technology and cyberspace.  For example, amendments to the Education Act will come into force in February 2008 that will bring the notion of “Cyberbullying” explicitly into the realm of school discipline.  Are schools ready?

Session 3 - Assess Your School Risks

This workshop will define the various categories of risk and assist you in establishing a process to assess, categorize and prioritize the risks that your school board faces so that resources can be allocated to address risk of loss on a priority basis. Once risks are properly categorized and prioritized, appropriate risk management strategies can be implemented to address the risks.

Claims/Legal Track

This track will examine how school board insurance claims have changed in the last 20 years and what you need to know when faced with a claim today.

Session 1 - Trends in Damage Assessment

assessed damages awarded to a plaintiff.  This session will review and discuss these 
factors,  highlighting both  the traditional factors as well as emerging trends in the
assessment of damages.

Session 3 - Tips to Control Damages

Education and awareness = Better understanding of the challenges, risks & options available to us when disaster strikes!       
Frozen pipes, sewer back up, damaged roofs, vandalism, etc. can create various types of water damage to your schools. This session will assist in determining what to do in the event of a water loss, how long you have to respond to a water loss, plus what can happen from delay. We will also look at the various forms of building materials and contents that can be restored from gym floors to school paper records. The board’s personnel is normally the first to respond. Find out how your response time can effect the success or failure of restoring your damaged buildings and contents.

Focusing on the issues that affect the Maintenance and Facilities personnel, this track will focus on such topics as:

Session 1 - ESA Continuous Safety & On-line Management

What are your compliance responsibilities to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code? What is unapproved electrical equipment? What are your responsibilities concerning it?  Representatives from the Electrical Safety Authority will host a session to discuss these topics and will be available to answer technical questions you may have.

Session 2 - Crime Loss Prevention

Break & enter, graffiti, vandalism, arson, and other criminal activities taking place on your school premises can result in many "nuisance" claims as well as exposing your board to a major loss.  This workshop will focus on preventative strategies to enable you to "target harden" your schools against criminal activities.  Topics covered include recommendations on physical protection against intrusion - proper locks, doors, windows, burglar alarm equipment, key management practices, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), plus any emerging trends in target hardening.
