Track & Session Profiles
Risk Management Track (RM)
This track is focusing on current Risk Management issues facing Principals and Educators.
High Risk Living and Schools: Roots behaviours and solutions
Peter Duncan - KICKS Organization
Many youth, and the adults influencing them are at a high risk of dangerous or criminal behaviours as an offender, a victim or both. These same people also suffer from the most problems in our schools. Causes transcend specific community boundaries, as do the solutions. The strategies present in this workshop are practical, inexpensive and based on skills integral to functional living: These are applicable to parents, educators and police officers. Although educators are not responsible for the problems, with these strategies they can take some ownership in solving them.
Children's Aid Society Reporting basics for Educators
Brahm Goldenberg and Karla Kram of CAS Toronto
TBD
Risk Assessment for Field Trips
Louise Melville, Canadian International Expeditions
In a society where what people want is the appearance, but not the essence of risk how can schools protect their most valuable assets, their students, and yet still give them the opportunity to experience adventure? This is the risk paradox which schools face today.
This workshop will look at the tools for assessing risks and how to complete a risk assessment.

Operations/Maintenance Track (OT)
Focusing on the issues that affect the Maintenance and Facilities personnel.
Tree Risk Assessment Workshop
Paul Hambidge, Treescape Ontario
Trees are an essential component of the outdoor environment of our schools; providing environmental benefits and an important learning resource for teachers and students. But, for property managers, are trees assets or liabilities?
What are the risks from trees on and adjacent school properties to staff, students and the public, and, can they be assessed and managed effectively?
Tree risk assessment and management practice has improved dramatically over the past 10 years with our greater understanding of tree biomechanics and revised risk assessment methodologies.
Minimizing Risks at the Pre-Tender Stage
Dražen Bulat, Miller Thomson LLP
Drazen will discuss the strategies for effective review and evaluation of the tender submissions as well as provide insight into clearly drafting the pre-tender documentation to prevent disputes. As a Partner with Miller Thomson, Drazen has extensive experience with risk management strategies to reduce the risk of an award being challenged within your organization. He will provide some sound risk management measures as well as addressing the issue of obligation of fairness. This naturally will all be wrapped up with sharing best practices and how do institutions address their risks at the pre-tender stage?
School Inspections 101: spot the hazard before a loss occurs
Jennyfer Payeur, OSBIE
Julie Welsh, OSBIE
Please join Jennyfer Payeur and Julie Welsh of OSBIE’s risk management department to learn what type of hazards are causing losses in Ontario schools. Annually, OSBIE inspects over 400 schools as part of our H.E.L.P. program and often times, the same hazards are spotted over and over again. As such, we have ample information to share in order to make every school as safe as possible. In addition, we’ll discuss the importance of documented maintenance routines and share personal experiences from school audits.
